Biography

Mark Wills is a Research Professor in the Infection Immunity Section at the University of Cambridge, leading research groups focused on understanding the immune response to persistent viral infections, particularly Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV). He studied Microbiology at the University of Surrey where he earned his PhD in Virology. He has a postdoctoral background from the University of Southampton, concentrating on the immune response to cancer before moving to the University of Cambridge in 1993. His research aims to uncover mechanisms of immune evasion by HCMV and approaches to eliminate latent carriage of the virus, which is particularly vital in immunosuppressed transplant patients. Wills has received funding from the Medical Research Council and Wellcome Trust, and collaborates on projects related to HIV latency, immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection, and Long COVID. His work has significant implications for understanding the dynamics of T-cell responses in viral infections and the mechanisms underlying immune dysregulation in various health contexts. Wills is also involved in the University’s Biological Safety sub-committee and serves as an editor for the Journal of General Virology.
