Marko Ilić is an Associate Professor in History of Contemporary Art at the University of Oxford's Department of History. His research specializes in contemporary art, with a significant focus on the social, political, and economic forces that shape the production, reception, and circulation of art. Ilić's work primarily addresses historical trajectories that influence today's art world, particularly within post-socialist and anti-imperialist contexts. He has conducted extensive research on the (post-)Yugoslav region and has published a major monograph titled 'A Slow Burning Fire: Rise of New Art Practice in Yugoslavia' (MIT Press, 2021), alongside numerous contributions to peer-reviewed journals such as Text and ARTMargins. Currently, he is collaborating with Sofia Gotti on a project that explores the intersections of art and populism, a timely subject in today's political climate. Ilić's scholarship has been supported by grants from organizations like the AHRC and the Leverhulme Trust. He holds a BA in Art History from the University of Cambridge (2011), an MA in 'Global Conceptualism' (with distinction, 2012), and a PhD in Art History from the Courtauld Institute (2016). Before his tenure at Oxford, he served as an Early Career Fellow at University College London and taught at several prestigious institutions, including Courtauld, Newcastle University, and the Universities of Cambridge and York.
