Biography

Marko Zivkovic is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Alberta. He was born and raised in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and graduated in Clinical Psychology from the University of Belgrade. In 1989, he moved to the University of Chicago to study anthropology, where he focused on Japanese culture. He spent a year in Yokohama at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies preparing for fieldwork in Japan, and his PhD dissertation explored the narratives surrounding the Serbian experience, later published as "Serbian Dreambook: National Imaginary and the Time of Milošević" by Indiana University Press in 2011. His research interests have evolved to encompass Serbia, Southeast Europe, the symbolic geographies of European margins, and the intersection of anthropology with art and science. Additionally, Zivkovic has developed a program to enhance the "ethnographic sensibility" among students, incorporating arts-based training. He has over 30 years of experience practicing Aikido and aspires to create a unique teaching approach aimed at dancers.
