Biography

Professor Gerhard's research work explores pathogen-host interactions and gastrointestinal infections. His research group investigates mechanisms that suppress the host's immune response, allowing infections to occur and examining the inflammatory factors involved in cancer development. He studied medicine at Heidelberg and Hamburg from 1988 to 1996, earning his MD in 1996 (summa cum laude). From 1997 to 2004, he completed his medical training, achieving board certification in internal medicine at the Department of Internal Medicine (II. Medizinische Klinik) of Klinikum rechts der Isar. He worked in a research group led by Professor Hans Clevers at the Netherlands Institute for Developmental Biology from 2004 to 2006. In 2006, he headed a research group in Internal Medicine at Klinikum rechts der Isar and acquired a postdoctoral teaching qualification in internal medicine in 2009. He was appointed an associate professor of medical microbiology and immunology at the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Immunology at TUM in 2010.
