Biography

Markus Schlaich is a renal physician and an accredited hypertension specialist recognized by the European Society of Hypertension. He has a strong background in clinical research with scientific interests focused on the pathophysiological aspects of hypertension, particularly the role of the sympathetic nervous system and the L-arginine/nitric oxide pathway. His specific research interests lie in the treatment modalities targeting the sympathetic nervous system, where he has contributed significantly to the development of renal denervation as a novel therapeutic approach for hypertension. Markus has successfully attracted competitive grant funding and is currently holding the NHMRC Senior Research Fellowship. Over his career, he has authored more than 230 publications and book chapters in peer-reviewed journals, primarily in the areas of hypertension and cardiorenal metabolic disease. He has received 18 research prizes and awards, including the prestigious Australian Museum Eureka Prize for Medical Research Translation. His career also includes serving on the Executive Committee of the High Blood Pressure Research Council of Australia and as an elected member of the Council of the International Society of Hypertension. Markus relocated to Germany in 2006, where he became the Head of the Neurovascular Hypertension & Kidney Disease Laboratory and later took on the role of Division Head of Hypertension, Stress, and Obesity at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Research Institute in Melbourne. As of July 2014, he has been the Head of the Dobney Hypertension Centre at the Royal Perth Hospital, University of Western Australia, leading an interdisciplinary team dedicated to developing effective therapies for hypertension and its adverse consequences.
