Biography

Marla Hlady's work moves in-between sculpture, site, performance, kinetics, sound art, and music performance. She is interested in how media functions culturally and critically, often re-imagined productively. Hlady has exhibited widely, including solo and group shows in venues like SFX Seoul 2019, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, and the Museo di San Domenico in Italy. Her site-specific works have been mounted in diverse locations, including fjords in Norway and a defunct grain silo in Canada. Hlady often collaborates with other artists, musicians, and choreographers, with recent collaborations including those with Christof Migone and Shannon Cooney. Hlady's educational background includes an M.F.A. from York University and a B.F. (Honours) from the University of Victoria. She teaches contemporary art practices, sound art, and sculpture, with a particular interest in land-based learning and expanded drawing practices.
