Biography

Marlan O. Scully is a pioneering figure in laser physics. His extensive work includes contributions to quantum theory and the laser Lamb shift. He is known for demonstrating lasing inversion and ultraslow light in hot gases, as well as using quantum coherence to detect anthrax in real time. Scully's research on quantum coherence and correlation effects has provided new insights into the foundations of quantum mechanics, notably through concepts like the quantum eraser. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Academia Europaea, and the Max Planck Society. His esteemed career is recognized by numerous awards, including the American Physical Society's Schawlow Prize, the Optical Society of America's Townes Award, the IEEE Quantum Electronics Award, the Franklin Institute's Elliott Cresson Medal, the OSA Lomb Medal, and the Humboldt Senior Faculty Prize. He has been honored as the Harvard Loeb Lecturer and has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Ulm. Scully is affiliated with the Institute for Quantum Science and Engineering (IQSE).
