Dr. Marleen Van Rijswick

Biography

Marleen van Rijswick is a Professor of European Dutch Water Law and the director at the Utrecht University Centre for Water, Oceans, and Sustainability Law. She specializes in the legal frameworks that contribute to the sustainable and equitable use of water, focusing on shared responsibilities among stakeholders. Her research work is characterized by a multidimensional and multidisciplinary approach and emphasizes comparative studies in water law and related fields such as environmental law and spatial planning law. Professor van Rijswick's research topics include flood protection, enhancing water quality, fair allocation of fresh water resources, and urban water management. She has been an active participant in the OECD's Water Governance Initiative, contributing to the development of the OECD Principles of Water Governance. Additionally, she has held visiting professorships at institutions in Paris and China, where she shared her expertise in European environmental law. She has authored numerous publications in both international and national journals and is a co-author of 'European Dutch Water Law.' Amid her academic duties, she also serves as a substitute member in the 'College van Beroep voor het hoger onderwijs' and has experience as a substitute judge in the district court of Oost-Brabant.
