Dr. Marlene Johansson Falck

Biography

Marlene Johansson Falck is a Professor of English Linguistics at Umeå University and has a strong background in cognitive linguistics, corpus linguistics, and experimental psycholinguistics. Her research focuses on the interplay of language and cognitive processes, particularly concerning the use of metaphor and spatial language. She has undertaken significant research projects, including a case study on the application of cognitive linguistics in language teaching, especially concerning the use of English prepositions. Her work analyzes usage patterns and applies insights to enhance teaching methodologies. Marlene's extensive academic journey includes earning her Ph.D. in English Linguistics from Luleå University of Technology in 2005, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she conducted research on vocal iconic gestures and motion metaphors. She has held various editorial and leadership positions in prominent linguistics associations and has actively contributed to research networks related to language cognition. With a commitment to teaching, Marlene supervises PhD candidates and engages students in linguistics at various academic levels.
