Biography

Marlene K. Sokolon obtained her PhD in Political Science from Northern Illinois University. She specializes in ancient Greek political thought and has broad interests in the history of political ideas. Her work mainly focuses on the thematic areas of justice and ethics, political emotions, as well as the intersections of politics and literature. Sokolon's research critically examines the political significance of traditionally assumed dichotomies such as reason versus emotion and biology versus culture. Her past research includes Aristotelian accounts of political emotions and inquiries into deliberative democracy and political education. She is particularly interested in how literature can contribute to democratic stability. Her recent book manuscript, 'Seeing Free Eyes: Poetic Justice in Euripides' (SUNY 2021), challenges the dominance of philosophical texts in the history of political thought by exploring the concept of justice in the tragedies of Euripides. She has also served as the Chair of the Department of Political Science from 2014 to 2017 and was the Graduate Program Director from 2008 to 2011. Sokolon has been a visiting scholar at the Centre Léon Robin, Paris IV / Lettres Sorbonne Université and the World Institute at the University of Edinburgh. Her research interests include Ancient Political Thought, Ethics Justice, Politics Literature, and Political Emotions.
