Biography

Marloes Oomen is an Assistant Professor at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Humanities, specializing in Sign Language Linguistics. Her research interests span across the fields of grammar, artificial intelligence, and linguistics, particularly focusing on sign languages and their structures. She obtained her bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences with a major in Linguistics and Cognitive Neuroscience from University College Utrecht, which sparked her interest in sign linguistics. In 2015, she earned her Research Master in Linguistics from the University of Amsterdam, where she completed a thesis on psych-verbs in Sign Language of the Netherlands. After that, her PhD project on argument structure in German Sign Language culminated in a dissertation in 2020. Marloes has significant experience teaching courses in syntax/semantics as well as supervising numerous BA and MA theses. Her research includes conducting psycholinguistic experiments and using AI tools to enhance the study and application of sign languages. Currently, she is engaged in a Veni project examining spatial use in Sign Language of the Netherlands.
