Biography

Marolo Alfaro is a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba, Canada. He received his BSc in civil engineering (magna cum laude) from the University of Mindanao, Philippines, and then earned an MEng in geotechnical engineering from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, followed by a PhD in civil engineering from Saga University, Japan. Alfaro has pursued postdoctoral fellowships at the Royal Military College of Canada and the University of Calgary in Canada. He has published extensively in technical journals and conference proceedings, receiving numerous awards for his research contributions, including the 2024 Technical Excellence Award from Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba for outstanding technical work, as well as recognition from the Canadian Geotechnical Society for his contributions to permafrost engineering. As a registered Professional Engineer specializing in geotechnical engineering, Alfaro has worked as a consultant on a wide variety of infrastructure projects. He has served as Chair of the Canadian Geotechnical Research Board and as Vice-President of the International Geosynthetics Society - North American Chapter. Dr. Alfaro is also an Associate Editor for the Frontiers in Built Environment Journal.
