Biography

Marta Costa Figueiredo is an Assistant Professor in the field of Electrochemistry at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), specifically within the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. Her research focuses on electrocatalysis and electro(catalytic) synthesis of sustainable processes that produce high-value chemicals, including fuels and organic molecules, utilizing waste substrates such as carbon dioxide and biomass. Her main objective is to comprehend, develop, and optimize electrochemical reactions under practical conditions to advance the application of electrochemistry on an industrial scale. Recognizing the global need for alternatives to fossil fuels, she asserts that electrochemistry and electrocatalysis are pivotal in the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly industrial processes. Figueiredo earned her MSc degree in Chemistry from the University of Porto, Portugal, in 2008, and went on to pursue her PhD in electrocatalysis focused on the reduction of nitrogen-containing compounds under the supervision of Prof. Juan Feliu, which she completed in 2012. Subsequently, she held postdoctoral positions at various universities in Europe, including Aalto University in Finland, Leiden University, and the University of Copenhagen, where she furthered her research in fuel cells and electrocatalytic synthesis of organic carbonates. Before joining TU/e as an Assistant Professor in 2019, she worked as a Junior Scientist at Avantium in Amsterdam, specializing in CO2 electrochemical conversion.
