Dr. Marte Otten

Biography

Marte Otten is an Assistant Professor at the University of Amsterdam's Psychology Research Institute. She specializes in Brain and Cognition, focusing on areas such as Social Cognition, Perceptual Processing, Prejudice, Stereotyping, Memory, Attention, and Cognitive Neuroscience. She obtained her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Cognitive Biological Psychology from Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, and completed her PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Amsterdam, where she was awarded the NWO Rubicon Scholarship. Following her PhD, she undertook a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University, working in Mahzarin Banaji's Social Cognition Laboratory. Her research examines how unconscious stereotypical knowledge affects low-level attentional processes and cognitive functions such as memory and language perception. After her time at Harvard, she received a Marie Curie fellowship to collaborate with Anil Seth at Sussex University, studying how social predictions shape perceptual processing. She has been featured in interviews with The Guardian and New Scientist discussing the influence of pre-existing social knowledge on basic cognitive processing. Otten also teaches courses on EEG and psycholinguistics at the master's and bachelor's levels, respectively, and developed a course introducing cognitive neuroscientific research methods.
