Dr. Marten Smidt

Biography

Marten P. Smidt is a professor at the University of Amsterdam's Swammerdam Institute of Life Sciences, where he leads a research group focused on molecular neuroscience. His research primarily investigates the molecular programming of midbrain dopaminergic neurons, with particular emphasis on the mechanisms underlying the development of these neurons and their roles in neurodevelopmental disorders such as Parkinson's disease. He has made significant contributions to understanding the transcription factors involved in the development of dopaminergic neurons, and his work has been pivotal in identifying critical genes and molecular pathways essential for neuron survival and differentiation. Smidt has initiated multiple influential research projects and collaborations at national and European levels, alongside serving in leadership roles within various academic committees. He founded two biotech companies, Macrobian Biotech and Parkinnova Therapeutics, which aim to innovate in the field of neurobiology and therapeutic development for neurological conditions, particularly targeted towards midbrain dopamine neurons.
