Dr. Martha Biondi

Biography

Martha Biondi holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University and is a professor in the Department of African American Studies at Northwestern University, with a courtesy joint appointment in the History Department. She specializes in twentieth century African American history and is a well-known author, recognized for her impactful works including "Stand Fight: Struggle Civil Rights Postwar New York City" published by Harvard University Press, which won the Thomas J. Wilson Prize for book of the year. Biondi's research interests focus on social movements, politics, labor, gender, urban studies, and international affairs, particularly concerning the Black experience in the United States from the post-1945 era to the present. Her recent book, "Black Revolution Campus," explores the national Black student movement during the late 1960s and the early Black Studies movement of the 1970s, highlighting crucial themes of activism in education and Black self-determination. Biondi's scholarly contributions have made significant impacts on the academic landscape, as her work connects historical student movements to ongoing struggles for social justice in contemporary higher education settings.
