Martha Brown received her Ph.D. in Microbiology from Queen’s University. She spent years working with insect viruses as a graduate student and introduced human adenoviruses during her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Sherbrooke. Upon joining the University of Toronto's Department of Microbiology, she merged the department with Medical Genetics to form the current Department of Molecular Genetics. In 2014, she received the Faculty of Medicine Excellence in Undergraduate Life Sciences Laboratory Teaching Award. Her research focuses on human enteric adenoviruses and the development of antiviral agents to treat serious adenovirus infections. Her lab studies the fastidious enteric adenoviruses HAdV-40 and HAdV-41, focusing on their unique structural features and their role in gut tropism.
