Biography

Martha Bulyk is a Professor at Harvard Medical School in the Department of Medicine and Pathology. With a focus on the regulatory interactions between transcription factors (TFs) and DNA, she studies how these interactions play a critical role in the regulation of eukaryotic genomes. Utilizing a combination of experimental and computational approaches, Dr. Bulyk investigates cis-regulatory codes within the genome, employing universal protein binding microarrays (PBMs) to characterize protein-DNA binding specificities. Her research includes the analysis of hundreds of TFs in model organisms like Drosophila and mammals, as well as examining the effects of protein-protein interactions on DNA binding and the evolutionary consequences of mutations in TF families. Dr. Bulyk is interested in the quantitative nature of information encoded by transcriptional enhancers and their role in cell-type-specific gene expression patterns. Her projects also aim to develop new technologies for high-throughput identification of tissue-specific enhancers, contributing to the understanding of DNA regulatory elements' functions and evolution.
