Dr. Martha Foschi

Biography

Martha Foschi is a Professor Emerita in the Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from Stanford University in 1970, following an M.A. in Sociology from the same institution in 1964. Additionally, she holds an Honours B.A. in Philosophy from the Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina, obtained in 1962. Her research specialization encompasses social psychology, theory construction, and experimental research, with a focus on cross-cultural comparisons. Foschi's current research investigates characteristics, performance expectations, and influence on behavior within task groups, as well as issues pertaining to gender, biased evaluations, and competence double standards in the workplace. Her contributions to the field are recognized through the establishment of the Martha Foschi Award for Excellence in Research and Teaching by her department, which has been awarded bi-annually since October 2014. She remains an active member of the Department of Sociology at UBC, contributing to the academic community through her teaching and research initiatives.
