Dr. Martha Kenney

Biography

Martha Kenney, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics at Duke University School of Medicine. She is an interdisciplinary pain researcher with expertise in pain management physiology and pain processing in children and adolescents. Her research focuses on identifying modifiable risk factors for adverse pain outcomes in adolescents and young adults with complex painful conditions, particularly sickle cell disease (SCD). Dr. Kenney has a strong track record in SCD pain research and has received support from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute for her work. She has contributed to various national organizations and has served in significant leadership positions, including expert member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Committee on Sickle Cell Disease. Dr. Kenney has also conducted research on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pain management care for sickle cell patients. Additionally, she is a certified professional coach focusing on time management and work-life balance for women in academia.
