Biography

Professor Martha Mundy is an expert in anthropology with a focus on the Arab World. Her research encompasses anthropology, law, state issues, and comparative sociology, particularly agrarian systems. Mundy conducted significant fieldwork in North Yemen from 1973 to 1977 and joined the London School of Economics in 1996 after teaching at various institutions including UCLA and the American University of Beirut. During her ten years in Jordan, she initiated a project on historical anthropology that investigated the transformation of political and economic relations in late Ottoman Southern Syria and present-day north Jordan. Her work combines the study of law and state with village society, relying on archival research from Istanbul and Damascus, as well as oral history and administrative records from Jordan. Following her retirement in 2012, she continues to explore agrarian history and contemporary agricultural crises in the Arab East.
