Biography

Martijn van den Hurk is an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University specializing in Spatial Planning. He teaches land and real estate development, and serves as the director of the master’s programme in Spatial Planning. His research focuses on institutional arrangements in land and real estate development, with a particular interest in the workings and impacts of contracts, public-private partnerships, and public accountability in relation to city building and urban transitions. He also co-authored the book 'Neighbourhoods of the Future: A Plea for Social Ecological Urbanism'. Martijn completed his Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of Antwerp in 2015 and holds Master’s degrees in Public Administration (2011) and Spatial Planning (2010) from Radboud University Nijmegen. Prior to his current role, he worked at the PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, Utrecht University’s Urban Futures Studio, and the University of Amsterdam.
