Biography

Professor Martin Anthony is the Director of the Data Science Institute at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He joined LSE in 1990 and has served as the Head of the Department of Mathematics. Professor Anthony's research focuses on the mathematical theory that underpins machine learning, data science, and artificial intelligence. He has significant expertise in mathematical modeling as it pertains to machine learning, artificial intelligence, and Boolean and pseudo-Boolean functions. Over the years, he has taught a wide variety of courses related to these fields and has been recognized with multiple awards for his teaching excellence, including the inaugural 2014 LSE Students' Union Teaching Excellence Award and the LSE Education Excellence Awards. Professor Anthony is also an active member of the LSE Council and has contributed to various committees and working groups. His educational background includes a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Glasgow, a PhD in Mathematics from Royal Holloway University of London, and an MA in Higher Professional Education from the University of London. He was part of the first cohort in LSE's Leadership Development Programme from 2012 to 2014.
