Biography

Martin Brown is a Professor Emeritus in Radiation Oncology at Stanford University. He has significantly contributed to the field through his roles as Director of the Graduate Program in Cancer Biology from 1990 to 2002, and Director of the Division of Radiation Cancer Biology from 1984 to 2004. His research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of resistance in solid tumors to cancer therapies, particularly the role of bone marrow-derived cells in restoring tumor vasculature affected by radiotherapy. One of his main projects investigates how to improve tumor cure rates by inhibiting tumor vasculature repair in glioblastoma through selective inhibition of chemokine pathways. He has been involved in clinical trials studying the efficacy of combining whole brain radiation therapy with temozolomide and plerixafor in treating glioblastoma, seeking novel approaches to improve patient outcomes. Over his career, he has received several distinguished awards, including the Bruce Cain Memorial Award from the American Association for Cancer Research and the Gold Medal from the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology. His academic journey began with a B.Sc in Physics from Birmingham University, followed by an M.Sc in Radiation Biology Physics from London University, culminating in a Ph.D. in Cancer Biology from Oxford University.
