Martin Conway is a Professor of Contemporary European History at the University of Oxford and a fellow of Balliol College. His research is principally concerned with European history, particularly the final decades of the twentieth century. He initially focused on the inter-war years, during which his doctoral thesis explored the history of the extreme-right movement in Belgium, particularly the Rexist movement during World War II. In 1993, he published 'Collaboration in Belgium: Léon Degrelle and the Rexist Movement, 1940-1944', which has been translated into French and Dutch. His interests have expanded to encompass Catholic politics and he has published numerous books and articles on this subject. Conway's significant works include 'Sorrows of Belgium: Liberation and Political Reconstruction, 1944-47', published in 2012, and 'Europe's Democratic Age: Western Europe, 1945-68', released by Princeton University Press in 2020. Currently, he is engaged in writing about the history of democracy in twentieth-century Europe and is completing a collaborative project on Social Justice within this time frame. He is also exploring the political citizenship of men across Europe during the twentieth century, aiming to understand the influence of male political action on the evolution of democratic and non-democratic regimes.
