Biography

Professor Martin Elsner develops analytical methods to investigate the fate of chemicals and microorganisms in complex systems. His research, conducted at the Institute of Hydrochemistry, focuses on compound-specific isotope analysis to measure isotope effects in natural abundance. By innovating analytical methods, his institute contributes to improvements in the management of chemicals in the environment and helps establish the self-purification potential of natural systems. Professor Elsner studied chemistry at the University of Freiburg and ETH Zürich, earning his doctorate in environmental sciences in 2003. He completed postdoctoral research at EAWAG and the University of Toronto, eventually leading a research unit at Helmholtz Zentrum München from 2006 to 2017. In 2011, he completed his lecturer qualification in Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry at the University of Tübingen. In 2017, he was appointed to the Chair of Analytical Chemistry and Water Chemistry and became the director of the Institute of Hydrochemistry at the Technical University of Munich.
