Biography

Martin Gaier is a lecturer in the Department of Art History at the University of Basel. He completed his Magister Artium in Art History, Classical Archaeology, and Musicology in 1994, followed by a doctorate in 1999. His scholarly contributions have received multiple honors, including the Hans-Janssen Prize for European Art History in 2004. Gaier served as an assistant in Early Modern Art History at the University of Basel from 2003 to 2010 and was also a research assistant at the ETH Zurich during 2006/07. His habilitation in 2010 focused on cultural politics and perceptions of art post-1871, resulting in notable academic distinctions. Gaier has held various positions, such as a visiting professorship at Leuphana University Lüneburg and a Heisenberg fellowship from the German Research Foundation at the Institute for Aesthetics and Art Science at the Berlin University of the Arts from 2013 to 2019. His research interests include the Renaissance and Baroque periods in Venice and Veneto, early reproduction photography, and the history of science and Italian studies in the 19th century.
