Biography

Martin Gibala is a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University. His research primarily examines the effects of exercise at the molecular and whole body level in healthy individuals and people with chronic diseases. In addition to basic mechanistic studies on the regulation of skeletal muscle energy metabolism, his laboratory conducts applied research focused on the impact of physical training and nutrition on human health and performance. His areas of expertise include animal physiology, metabolism, exercise physiology, skeletal muscle biology, physiology, and sports nutrition. Gibala is involved with the McMaster Centre for Nutrition, Exercise, and Health Research and the McMaster Physical Activity Centre of Excellence (PACE). He has a strong academic background with a PhD from the University of Guelph, an MSc from McMaster University, and a Bachelor of Human Kinetics from the University of Windsor. He also completed postdoctoral training at the Copenhagen Muscle Research Centre.
