Dr. Martin Goodman

Biography

Professor Goodman studies in particular political, social, and religious history of Jews in the Roman Empire and is the author of a variety of works on the history of Judaism. He has published several books, including 'History of Judaism' (Allen Lane, 2017), which explores the development of Jewish thought and practice through various historical contexts, including Jewish revolts in the Roman world and the evolution of the role of rabbis. He has been a faculty member at Oxford since 1986, appointed as a Readership in Jewish Studies in 1991. Additionally, he served as President of the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies from 2014 to 2018 and became a Fellow of the British Academy in 1996. His research interests primarily focus on the history of Judaism and its intersections with Graeco-Roman cultures, providing insights into the complexities of Jewish life and identity during this period.
