Dr. Martin Holcik

Biography

Martin Holcik is a Professor and Departmental Chair at Health Sciences University. He holds an MSc from Comenius University and a PhD from Carleton University. His research focuses on the regulation of mRNA translation, which is crucial for fundamental biological processes. Dysregulated translation is implicated in disease pathogenesis, including cancer, diabetes, neurodegeneration, and rare genetic disorders. His studies aim to understand the mechanisms of selective translation and the impact of RNA binding proteins in viral infection and apoptosis. Holcik investigates tRNA metabolism defects in patient cells and model organisms, with the expectation that his work will enhance the understanding of how dysregulated translation contributes to human diseases. This research also seeks to establish clinical applications based on these findings.
