Biography

Martin J.M. Hoondert studied musicology and theology, specializing in music rituals. He became an associate professor in 2007 in 'Music, Religion & Ritual' at the Department of Culture Studies at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. His research focuses on rituals in contemporary societies, emphasizing death rituals and memorialization practices. Key topics include cremation rituals in Dutch society, changing death mentalities in Western societies, contemporary requiem, musical repertoires for funeral rites, commemoration music, grief, and the impact of music during World War events, as well as memorialization practices concerning genocides such as those in Rwanda and Srebrenica. Currently, he is working on a Special Issue about divorce rituals for the Handbook of Cremation Rituals. His expertise lies in ritual studies, musicology, death studies, and memory studies, and his projects aim to bridge these fields, addressing the 'blind spot' that exists in scholarly discussions of music's role in rituals. He actively contributes to the COST Action program 'Cultural Victimology', focusing on the representation of victims and their stories in various art forms.
