Biography

Martin Hurst is a geomorphologist at the University of Glasgow, having joined the institution in 2016. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh and previously worked at the British Geological Survey from 2012 to 2016. His research focuses on the combined use of numerical modeling and data science to investigate the rates and patterns of erosion on Earth. Hurst's primary research interests lie in understanding the evolution of the Earth's surface, particularly in tectonically active landscapes and eroding coastlines. He aims to elucidate the processes that lead to the development of fast-changing landscapes, where evidence is often scant. By gathering quantitative data on landscape forms through topographic analysis and field observations, Hurst applies numerical models to predict how landscapes evolve under various climatic and tectonic conditions. His work is critical in predicting landscape changes on human-relevant timescales, thereby addressing pressing environmental concerns.
