Dr. Martin Jakobsson

Biography

Martin Jakobsson is a Professor in Marine Geology and Geophysics at Stockholm University. He completed his PhD in 2000 and has since held a research scientist position at the Center for Coastal Ocean Mapping at the University of New Hampshire. Returning to Stockholm University in April 2004, he was appointed Associate Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences. Martin became a full Professor in September 2009 and served as the Head of the Department from 2012 to 2018, later becoming Dean of Earth Sciences in 2021. His research interests focus on the Arctic Ocean's glacial history, the West Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, ice-ocean interaction, and geophysical seafloor mapping using acoustic methods. He has spent over a year on open ocean research vessels, participating as Co-Chief Scientist in nine international ocean expeditions. In addition to his academic work, Martin has been elected to various scientific academies and has served in leadership roles, including as the Vice Chair of the UNESCO-IOC-IHO General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans. He is currently involved in the Seabed 2030 project, which aims to map the world's oceans by 2030.
