Biography

Martin W. Lewis is a senior lecturer in international history at Stanford University. He graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a degree in Environmental Studies in 1979 and obtained a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of California, Berkeley in 1987. His dissertation and subsequent book examined the interplay of economic development, environmental degradation, and cultural change in the highlands of northern Luzon, Philippines. Lewis has co-authored the world geography textbook "Diversity Globalization: World Regions, Environment, Development" and has served as an associate editor for the "Geographical Review". His teaching experience includes positions at George Washington University and Duke University, where he also co-directed the Comparative Area Studies program. At Stanford University, he has engaged in several administrative roles in international relations and policy studies and has been with the institution since fall 2002. In addition to his academic duties, he actively writes about global geography on his site, GeoCurrents.info.
