Biography

Martin Neumann is a professor of Romance Philology at the University of Hamburg, specializing in French and Portuguese literary studies. He was born on March 13, 1961, and completed his secondary education in 1980 in Neustadt/WN. His academic career began at the University of Regensburg, where he studied English and Romance languages for teacher training. He served as a student assistant and later as a research assistant under Professor J. Hösle. Neumann earned his doctorate in Romance Philology in 1990 with a dissertation focused on the incest taboo in 18th-century French narrative literature. He furthered his academic qualifications with a habilitation in 1996, examining the works of the Sicilian author Gesualdo Bufalino. Neumann has served in various academic roles, including a visiting professorship at the University of Düsseldorf, before becoming a full professor at the University of Hamburg in April 2000. His research interests include the Enlightenment era in France, Portugal, and Italy, as well as examining literary media and Portuguese writers in a European context. He has a keen focus on lusophone literatures of Africa.
