Biography

Associate Professor Martin Stone is a researcher and teacher at Monash University in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute. He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science (Honors) degrees from the University of Auckland in New Zealand, and his PhD from the University of Cambridge in the UK. He has served as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, USA, and as a faculty member at Indiana University in Bloomington, USA, before moving to Monash in 2007. From 2013 to 2016, Martin served as the Director of the Graduate Program in Biomedical Science at Monash. His research program focuses on biochemistry and pharmacology of chemokines and their receptors, which play critical roles in directing the migration of leukocytes during inflammatory responses. His lab has made significant contributions to understanding how post-translational tyrosine sulfation influences chemokine receptor recognition and the structural basis for how chemokines differentially activate shared receptors to elicit distinct cellular outcomes.
