Biography

Martin van Ittersum holds a PhD in Agricultural Environmental Science from Wageningen University. He is a professor in the Plant Production Systems group, focusing on research and teaching in integrated assessment of agricultural systems at farm, regional, and global levels. Martin has led prominent international projects addressing global food availability, yield gap analysis, phosphorus scarcity, and climate change within circular food systems. He has been leading the Global Yield Gap Atlas project since 2011, aimed at mapping the potential for increasing agricultural production on current agricultural land. Furthermore, he co-chaired the 1st and 4th editions of the International Conference on Global Food Security and is set to chair the upcoming 5th edition in Leuven in 2024. Between 2015 and 2016, he served as the interim chair of the Farming Systems Ecology group at Wageningen University. With over 200 authored papers in international scientific journals, he has also supervised MSc and PhD students worldwide. He was recognized as a highly-cited researcher starting in 2015 and has been a member of the Academic Board of Wageningen University since 2020. In 2022, he acted as a visiting professor at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala.
