Biography

Martin Wagner received his Ph.D. in Germanic languages and literatures from Yale University in 2014. He subsequently taught comparative literature at Yonsei University's Underwood International College. In 2016, he joined the University of Calgary, where he covers a broad range of topics in European literary and intellectual history from the Enlightenment to the present. Wagner has authored four books, including 'Narratology Observation: Studies in Technique of European Literary Realism' (De Gruyter, 2018), which analyzes visuality in narrative sequences. Other significant works include 'Stage Debate: The Political Significance of Vienna’s Burgtheater, 1814-1867' (University of Toronto Press, 2023), and 'Minimale Moral – Eine Theorie des deutschsprachigen Rap' (transcript, 2025), which explores thematic and formal elements of German rap music. His forthcoming book discusses the history of obedience in Germany from the Enlightenment to the present. Wagner is also the book review editor for 'Seminar: A Journal of Germanic Studies.'
