Biography

Martin White joined the Berkeley faculty in 2001. He received his B.Sc. from the University of Adelaide and his PhD in 1992 from Yale. He was a postdoctoral fellow before working at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Harvard. He then joined the Berkeley faculty, focusing on work in both the Astronomy and Physics Departments. Prof. White's research interests are in theoretical and computational cosmology, with a specific focus on cosmic microwave background anisotropies and the large-scale structure of the universe. He collaborates closely with major astronomical surveys and is a founding member of the Planck, BOSS, and DESI collaborations. Currently, he is involved in the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, aimed at obtaining optical spectra of tens of millions of galaxies and quasars to construct a 3D map of the nearby universe, spanning 11 billion light years.
