Dr. Martina Kauzlaric

Biography

Martina Kauzlaric is a scientific employee at the Institute of Geography at the University of Bern. Her research focuses on water-related hazards and the development of hydrologic forecasting systems that predict flood events with short lead times of 6 to 72 hours based on forecasted precipitation. This work supports emergency services in their response efforts, such as temporary evacuations in hazard zones. Kauzlaric emphasizes the importance of predicting the hazard footprint and direct consequences of rainfall events to determine timely, site-specific flood losses and improve responsiveness across various critical decision-making processes. She is currently developing a national hydrological modeling framework for Switzerland that is transparent, interchangeable, and publicly accessible. This open-source framework incorporates automated topological builds of hundreds of gauges and characterizes a wide range of hydrological behaviors, making it applicable across different regions. Kauzlaric also focuses on computational efficiency to evaluate and improve hydrological forecast predictability, ensuring that future developments align with established modeling chains. Her contributions aim to provide significant social and economic benefits through improved flood risk management.
