Dr. Martina Seifert

Biography

Martina Seifert is a Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Hamburg, where she leads the Archaeological Institute. Her research interests focus on the archaeology and cultural history of the ancient Mediterranean, specifically Greek festivals and cult practices, ancient harbor research, settlement archaeology, and the technical generation of field research data. Seifert has held various academic roles, including Deputy Speaker of the Department of Cultural History and Studies and has been involved in significant academic administrative responsibilities, including membership in faculty councils and committees. She has received numerous accolades, including the Claussen-Simon Foundation Prize and a short-term fellowship from the DAAD at the University of Palermo. Seifert's academic journey includes a doctorate from Ruhr University Bochum, with her habilitation focusing on representations of children and youth in Greek cult and festival contexts. She has extensive publishing experience, having authored several monographs and articles on topics related to ancient pottery, images, and community interactions in ancient port cities. Her teaching includes modules on archaeological theory and practice, modern applications of geophysics in archaeological contexts, and education on ancient visual cultures.
