Biography

Martyn Cobourne graduated from King's College London in 1990 and undertook specialty training in orthodontics at King’s College Hospital (1994-1997). He was awarded the Medical Research Council Clinical Training Fellowship and conducted basic science research in Paul Sharpe’s laboratory at Guy’s Dental Hospital, leading to his PhD completion in 2001. His research has received accolades, including the Senior Colgate Prize from the British Society for Dental Research in 2000. After additional clinical training, he was appointed as Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Orthodontics at King’s College London in 2004, achieving a promotion to Professor in 2011. His research focus includes molecular signaling pathways in early head and face development, with particular attention to Sonic hedgehog signaling. Additionally, he has investigated the efficacy of contemporary orthodontic treatment interventions through numerous randomized clinical trials. He has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles and authored successful orthodontic textbooks, contributing significantly to the field. He has received several prestigious awards for his research, and he has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Orthodontics since 2012.
