Biography

Martyn graduated Institute of Sound and Vibration Research in Southampton with a BSc in Engineering Acoustics and Vibration. He subsequently worked on a variety of biomedical industrial parameter estimation and measurement problems. He was appointed lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in 1990, promoted to Senior Lecturer, and later Reader, before his appointment as Professor of Electromechanical Systems in 2008. Martyn has held a number of leadership roles at Southampton, including Deputy Head (Education) of the School of Engineering Sciences from 2006 to 2009 and Head of Engineering Sciences from 2011 to 2015, during which time he led 50 academic staff and researchers. His subsequent role was Associate Dean (Education) for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences from 2018 to 2021, where he provided operational and strategic leadership for engineering, chemistry, physics, and computer science programmes comprising 5,500 students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
