Biography

Martyn Lyons is an Emeritus Professor at the University of New South Wales in the School of Humanities and Languages. He completed his D.Phil. at Oxford University in 1977. He served as the head of the history school and was the Faculty’s Associate Dean for Research and Postgraduate Affairs from 2002 to 2007. His research primarily focuses on distinct fields such as French revolutionary history and the Napoleonic era, alongside interests in reading and writing in Europe and Australia. Professor Lyons has authored nineteen books, including significant titles like 'A History of Reading and Writing in the Western World' (Palgrave-Macmillan, 2010) and 'The Writing Culture of Ordinary People in Europe, c. 1860-1920' (Cambridge University Press, 2013). He has held visiting positions at various prestigious institutions, including Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Paris, Corpus Christi College in Cambridge, and the University of Alcalá de Henares in Spain. He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 1997 and awarded the Centenary Medal for his services to the humanities and the study of history in 2003. Notably, he served as the President of the Australian Historical Association from 2008 to 2020.
