Biography

Marvin Stanley Swartz is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Duke University. His major research interest focuses on examining the effectiveness of services for severely mentally ill individuals, particularly the factors that enhance or impede positive outcomes. His current research includes the effectiveness of involuntary outpatient commitment, psychiatric advance directives, and the impacts of criminal justice outcomes on individuals with mental illnesses, as well as the role of violence associated with mental illness and antipsychotic medications. Dr. Swartz has served as a member of the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Mandated Community Treatment and has investigated the effects of psychiatric advance directives on improving outcomes for individuals with severe mental illness. He has engaged in evaluating New York's Assisted Outpatient Treatment Program, assessing the costs associated with criminal justice involvement for severely mentally ill individuals. His involvement in clinical trials has included serving as Co-Principal Investigator on NIMH-funded studies focused on the treatment outcomes of schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease.
