Biography

Marxa L. Figueiredo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, where she leads a research program focused on the interplay between skeletal and immune systems. Her lab develops innovative therapies for bone metastatic cancers and inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, utilizing multifunctional cytokines, minibinders, and small molecules to target bone inflammatory cells. These efforts are aimed at promoting regeneration and immune modulation. Dr. Figueiredo’s research team is advancing gene delivery and stem cell therapy platforms, especially sonoporation-based gene therapy using adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells as therapeutic vehicles. These approaches are specifically designed to enhance tissue repair and maintain immune balance in preclinical models of cancer and arthritis. In addition to her research, Dr. Figueiredo is committed to education and mentorship, having directed Veterinary Histology courses and mentored M.S., Ph.D., and D.V.M. students in various research endeavors. Her work has garnered support from both internal and external funding sources, including the FDA, NIFA, CTSI, and NIH, and holds promise for improving health outcomes for both companion animals and humans.
