Biography

Mary-Ellen Harper is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Immunology at the University of Ottawa, where she also serves as a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Mitochondrial Bioenergetics and Metabolic Health. She is the Director of the Ottawa Institute of Systems Biology and her research focuses on understanding the mechanistic origins of metabolic disease, particularly through the study of mitochondrial energetics, uncoupling proteins, reactive oxygen species, glutathione synthesis, and oxidative stress. Harper has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Guelph and a PhD from the University of Ottawa, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Cambridge University in the UK. Her lab is dedicated to advancing knowledge in the field of metabolic health and developing innovative solutions to address related health challenges.
