Biography

Mary Anne Vallianatos joined the University of Victoria, Faculty of Law as an Assistant Professor in 2025. She holds a PhD from the University of Victoria, an LLM from Columbia Law School, and a JD from the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University. Her research focuses on Canadian legal history, the law of empire, and issues of race and ethnicity in migration. Her PhD dissertation titled 'Legal History of Asian Migration: Race Exception in British Columbia, 1885-1949' explores historical perspectives on immigration and race. Prior to her tenure at UVic, she served as an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Windsor, where she taught courses in property law, access to justice, and the legal experiences of Asian Canadians. Vallianatos has also held fellowships at UVic Law and Dalhousie, teaching critical race theory and contract law. During her doctoral studies, she was called to the bar in Ontario and British Columbia and practiced Aboriginal law in Vancouver.
