Biography

Mary Bosworth is the founder and Co-Director of Border Criminologies, an interdisciplinary research group focusing on the intersections of criminal justice and border control. In addition to being a Professor of Criminology, she is a Fellow at St Cross College. Professor Bosworth conducts research on the experiences of staff and incarcerated people in prisons and immigration detention centers, as well as the processes involved in deportation. Her research has an international comparative focus, including work conducted in Britain, France, Greece, Australia, and other countries. She has received funding from various sources, including the European Research Council, Leverhulme Trust, British Academy, ESRC, Nuffield Foundation, Australian Research Council, and John Fell Fund. Mary is a member of the editorial boards of notable journals such as Theoretical Criminology, Incarceration, Punishment & Society, and the International Journal of Migration and Border Studies. She teaches courses on the MSc in Criminology & Criminal Justice on topics such as 'Criminal Justice, Migration & Citizenship', 'Theorizing Punishment', and 'Qualitative Methods'. She supervises DPhil, MSc, and MPhil students, particularly in areas focused on immigration detention and deportation topics. In the academic year 2024-2025, Mary will serve as the Director of Graduate Studies for the MSc Programme.
