Biography

Born in Montreal, Mary Ellen Davis has lived in France and Quebec. She graduated in Film Production from the Fine Arts program at Concordia University and has created short films featuring Montreal jazz musician Nelson Symonds. In the late 1980s and 1990s, she spent significant time in Guatemala, where she filmed 16mm documentaries such as 'Devil's Dream' (1992) and 'Tierra Madre' (1996), addressing the injustices in the country and honoring the cultures of Guatemalan citizens. Her documentary, 'Haunted Land,' released in 2001, explores historical memory and follows Chuj Maya survivor Mateo Pablo's journey back to the site of a massacre. In addition to gaining local and international recognition for her work, Davis directed 'Mexico: Dead Alive' (1996) and helped produce the feature film 'Alejandro' (1994). Since 1999, she has been part-time faculty at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema at Concordia University and has co-curated film screenings focused on Palestinian perspectives and Syrian experiences. Davis has also led workshops for women refugees from Syria, creating mutual portraits in a collective project released in 2020.
